San Francisco singer, songwriter Nick Gravenites died Sept 18th, at age 85. Originally growing up in Chicago, he regularly hung out in the clubs where Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy played. He wrote the standard 'Born in Chicago'. In 1967 he formed the 'Electric Flag' with PBBB guitarist Mike Bloomfield, Barry Goldberg and Buddy Miles. According to music writer Joel Selvin, Gravenites was "the original San Francisco connection for the Chicago crowd."
He is a member of Alison Krauss and Union Station since 1998. As a sideman, he has played on more than 1,600 albums, including with Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Paul Simon, T-Bone Burnett, Keb' Mo', Ricky Skaggs, J. D. Crowe & the New South, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and Johnny Mathis.
This was originally on Billy Edd Wheeler's 1963 LP 'Billy Edd Wheeler' . / The chorus came from the 1931 folk song, "The Lonesome Valley," by the Carter Family.
