David Crosby was fired in October 1967 {he objected to using outside writers, as with this song}, and drummer Michael Clarke left the band midway through recording of this album / The album was voted the fourth-best album ever in a 1971 "ZigZag" magazine readers' poll.

The group was the brainchild of Marshall Chess (son of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess), wishing through the label "Cadet Concept" to release recordings outside the usual blues-based music that Chess was known for, in particular Psychedelic music. The group included a Chess receptionist named Minnie Riperton.

... In 2011, this song was voted the "No. 1 female song" by listeners of BBC Radio 4's show "Desert Island Discs". Also - In 2021, it was listed at # 26 on the "Rolling Stone Top 500 Best Songs of All Time" / . As with many of the songs on this album, it might have been inspired by her relationship with Graham Nash.
