The Girl From Ipanema [1st record- ed in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro/ vocal debut of Astrud Gilberto]
Astrud Gilberto (born as 'Astrud Evangelina Weinert'), a Brazilian singer who helped popularize the Bossa Nova sound, died June 5th, at age 82. Her signature recording was 'The Girl From Ipanema', which is believed to be the second-most recorded Pop song in history, after Paul McCartnrey'ds 'Yesterday'. PERSONNEL: Getz: tenor sax / Jpao Gilberto - Guitar, vocals / Antanio Carlos Jobim - piano / Sabastio Neto - double bass / Milton Banana - drums / ASTRUD GILBERTO - VOCALS //// * Norman Gimbel added the English lyrics.
* - The guitar arrangement closely follows Bert Jansch's version of that song, recorded for his 1966 album 'Jack Orion'. Al Stewart, who followed Jansch's gigs, taught it to Page, who played on Stewart's 1967 debut album, 'Bed-Sitter Images'. / Page had regularly performed this live, as a medley with the Yardbirds recording "White Summer".
Led Zeppelin's 'Black Mountain Side' is similar to this track; see explanation in the track above, under the 'Comments'. Jansch's record comppany considered taking legal action, but never did. Nevertheless, Bert Jansch said that "Page ripped me off, didn't he ...".
Also covered by English group Juicy Lucy (1970 - Lie Back And Enjoy it), Aynsley Dumbar {with Blue Whale}, 1971 // WHERE the original album's title came from: Dandelion Records's owner and executive producer, famed BBC DJ John Peel, asked the group to run through a song a second time in the studio, and the band members yelled "Bugger Off!, Peel", which gave rise to the album's title. The group refused to record any overdubs or second takes.
Tom McDermott: Pianist and composer. In 1984, he moved to New Orleans and became noted for the styles of jazz associated with NO, especially Traditional jazz and ragtime. He was in the group "Dukes Of Dixieland" through much of the 1990s / Evan Christopher: Clarinetist
Graham Day has been in The Prisoners (1980 - 1986), Thee Mighty Caesers (1984 - 1988: drummer), The Prime Movers, The Solarflares and The Buff Medways. He was married to Fay Day, who was in the groups The Prime Movers and Makin' Time. / Click on the Link above, to read an article about this release.

* - Also released on their 'Long Player LP' (Feb 1971) but in a live version, that was recorded at the Fillmore East / Click on the Link above, to view the original single.
