Permanent Dream is a reworked version of the debut album of short-lived psychedelic 60s pop group Tomorrow. It was ‘reimagined’ by guitarist Steve Howe and reissued as Permanent Dream last month. Tomorrow (originally called The In Crowd) appeared in the 1967 film Smashing Time and released their one studio album the following year.
Hendrix and friends, including The Doors’ Jim Morrison, jam at The Scene Club (301 West 46th Street) in New York, probably on March 7, 1968 (the date is disputed). Among the songs they performed were “Red House,” “I’m Gonna Leave This Town,” “Bleeding Heart,” “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and “Sunshine Of Your Love.” As Hendrix breaks in the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” Morrison falls to the floor and begins moaning into the microphone.
This song was written as the theme for the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” – but wasn’t used. An alternative version, entitled “Tomorrow Never Dies (rough mix),” was released in the 2006 double-CD deluxe version of This is Hardcore.
