"I recorded these sounds on a trip with friends to Marrekesh. We stayed in a riad just outside the souk, or public marketplace. Riads are only found in the medinas (old walled centres) of a Moroccan city...they were built centuries ago and designed to be self-sufficient, with gardens and swimming pools and fountains designed for woman in particular who did not have freedom go outside. We were guests of the Hermes brothers who were close with my friend who is a celebrated opera singer. The muezzin is the person who proclaims the call to the daily prayer (_al_t) five times a day (Fajr prayer, Zuhr prayer, Asr prayer, Maghrib prayer and Isha prayer) at a mosque. The muezzin plays an important role in ensuring an accurate prayer schedule for the Muslim community. There are 11 mosques, each with their Muezzin, in Marrakesh."
"Don Cherry on Pocket Trumpet, Berger on xylophone (ko-syil) joins a group of 11 other Swedish musicians to improvise on Ghananian funeral music. Berger is also an ethnomusicologist and drummer. Manfred Eicher produced. The Allmusic review by Brian Olewnick awarded the album 4_ stars stating ....the combination of stunningly gorgeous repeating themes and inspired improvising make one wish the music would never stop. This recording, though little known, is one of the very finest items ever released by ECM. While wonderful in and of itself, it might also serve as a fine introduction to West African music, albeit via a circuitous route through Stockholm."
